The art/science of telling stories

Have you ever wondered why some people are better in communication than others? It's not necessarily language. There are people with very good vocabulary, who get great scores in verbal tests, who cannot really communicate so well.

I was wondering what is it that makes a great speaker. I believe it is the art of telling stories.
The western education systems predominantly encourage stuff like "show and tell", story telling, etc. which is given absolutely no importance in countries like India. Indians are terrific in problem-solving but, are poor story tellers. Come to think of it, average Indians live through a lot of fun experiences in everyday life and fail to quite recognize the humor in situations.

The stand-up comedians are some of the best story-tellers. They pick the most mundane, ordinary things to talk about and tell stories that make it, oh so funny. They inspire me to learn to tell stories, communicate and find humor in everyday situations.

George Carlin, one of the funniest angry man, says "Every joke has one exaggeration". My favorite comedian, Ron "Tater Salad" White is the king of story telling. Some of his stories are from such ordinary situations, I am very impressed by the way he brings out the humor in it.

As a kid, I had completely overlooked the importance of communication and now, I am inspired to catch up. You might catch me telling stories about the most mundane things from now on... although I don't wanna overdo that...

One hand in my pocket

I'm broke but I'm happy
I'm poor but I'm kind
I'm short but I'm healthy, yeah
I'm high but I'm grounded
I'm sane but I'm overwhelmed
I'm lost but I'm hopeful baby
What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be fine fine fine
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five

I feel drunk but I'm sober
I'm young and I'm underpaid
I'm tired but I'm working, yeah
I care but I'm worthless
I'm here but I'm really gone
I'm wrong and I'm sorry baby
What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be quite alright
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is flicking a cigarette
What it all comes down to
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving the peace sign

I'm free but I'm focused
I'm green but I'm wise
I'm shy but I'm friendly baby
I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chicken shit
I'm sick but I'm pretty baby
And what it all boils down to
Is that no one's really got it figured out just yet
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is playing the piano
What it all comes down to my friends
Is that everything's just fine fine fine
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is hailing a taxicab...
